This piece is a layered incense box (Kōbako) from the Meiji period, featuring a relatively rare fitted lid. While incense boxes were widely used at the time, those with fitted lids were limited to high-quality examples. The body of the box is decorated with takamaki-e, carefully depicting reed and pampas grass motifs on all four sides, creating a design that evokes seasonal sensibility while maintaining a calm elegance. The lid is adorned with plum blossom motifs in high-relief maki-e, adding depth and a touch of brilliance.
